In April 2024 the World Economic Forum and the Schwab Foundation published “The State of Social Enterprise: A Review of Global Data 2013–2023”, the first serious attempt to size the sector worldwide. Drawing on data from more than 80 countries, it estimates that there are about 10 million social enterprises, a little over 3% of all businesses. Together they generate roughly $2 trillion in annual revenue and provide close to 200 million jobs, around 6% of the global formal job market. The work was a joint effort of partners such as Bertelsmann Stiftung, Euclid Network, Social Enterprise UK and the Social Enterprise World Forum, which shows how many networks it takes to assemble comparable numbers. Definitions and survey methods still differ between countries, so the figures are best read as informed estimates rather than exact counts. The authors call on governments and international organisations to invest in a stronger global data infrastructure. For a small organisation like ours, the practical lesson is that better evidence is a precondition for better policy and funding.
